I'm finally starting to upload to a page which has been occupied by little other than an "under construction" sign for some time. Wishing I had access to a darkroom so I could do my own developing, and a tripod, but ... oh well ....
The image links to the site, and is hosted on Photobucket.

Nudity, violence and other things not allowed « Result #3 on Jul 18, 2006, 12:36pm »
Nude images are not allowed on these board, period. No, not even "tastefully done, artistic ones", and by "nudity" I refer to any absence of clothing that might raise issues of the "indecent exposure" ordinances were the photo taken out on the street while the police drove by.
This policy has nothing to do with any offense taken by me to such images. It made necessary both by a desire to stay clearly within the bounds of Proboard's Terms of Service, and by the experience of watching those who genuinely do peddle porn try to wriggle their way into places where they don't belong by declaring what they do to be "art". "Where do you draw the line?", goes the question. We'd rather not deal with it, and so we're putting a zero tolerance policy in place.
This also goes for violent images, scatological ones, anything that might be considered "offensive" or "disgusting" by the bulk of the population, offline. The test is this: would you be willing to show these images to a high school art class, and do you think that the teacher and the school board would both be comfortable with allowing you to do so? If the answer is "no", then post your images to your own website, but please don't post them here, even if the Proboards TOS should ever allow them. Even were the reaction of our provider not an issue, we'd still like this to be a place that people enjoy visiting, even if that means it won't be edgy or subversive enough for some tastes, usually those of people who can't accept that the 1990s are over and that the "modern primitive" thing has worn a little thin for a lot of us.
We appreciate reports of violations of this policy. The spam levels in our inboxes being what it is, the ringmaster's homelist might be the best place to report any problems for now. We hope that people will be mature enough that none will arise, but if not, we'd appreciate hearing about it so that we can act as quickly as possible.
Policy: You may not promote your own stuff here « Result #4 on Jul 18, 2006, 12:04pm »
This is the kind of board where you tell people about the upcoming Ansel Adams exhibition, not where you mention that you'll be exhibiting at the Gold Coast art fair. Notices for your own events are welcome on the Chicago Images list, which is a kind of sister forum for this board.
The reasons for this are fairly simple. Your own event announcements are time sensitive material that must be seen quickly, if they are to be of use to you at all. Drop them on a board and they get buried with all of the other threads. On a list, all eyes are upon the last post made. There's more of a sense of what's up right now, and a lot less wandering.
A board choked with old notices about events already over would be unreadable, any way. People may be talking about those museum shows for years to come but, no offense, odds are that they won't we taking about your shows in quite the same way. Or mine or any of ours. So, we move this material to where it will be up and out of the way about as soon as it ceases to be topical, given the sequential nature of a yahoogroup and its archives. If somebody does want to look for your old post there, he can do a search over there and find it. But most won't, and we configure these things for their convenience.

I'm not going to write out 50 pages of rules intended to cover every possible bit of bad behavior that somebody might decide to engage in, the way some moderators will. I find myself wondering who is ever going to read one of those ponderous documents, aside from the aforementioned ill behaved people who will be on the hunt for a quote to take out of context as they try to play lawyer. So let's lay this one out from the beginning: this admin is putting an "elastic clause" in place. Any time a member of this board does something that falls under the category of "you know better", as defined by standard, common sense mores (pre-Internet, pre-postmodernism, pre-multicultural political correctness) in the Midwestern US, I'm going to crack down on the offending party whether there is a "rule" on the books to cover the situation or not.
This thought should give reasonable people little to fear, because the mores I refer to aren't particularly harsh ones. Let's note that they bear little resemblance to those prescribed by "netiquette" which, by and large, was written by trolls for trolls. One of the "rules" of netiquette seems to hold that no matter how clearly outrageous somebody's behavior is, that he's entitled to a few warnings before disciplinary action follows. Rubbish. If, for example, you've just posted nude photos of your girlfriend's children, violating the child pornography laws, you know better. A warning that you would be expecting to get is a warning that you shouldn't be given, because it's not giving you information that you didn't already have. One who asks for such a consideration isn't asking for clarity, he's asking for an opportunity to play civil disobedience games as he drags his feet on compliance with common sense norms of behavior, turning the whole thing into a test of wills. So, where behavior is clearly out of line, the rule will be "one strike and you're out".
That having been said, let's move on to what isn't common sense, necessarily.
